CWU welcomes plans for new pro-worker public contracts
August 7 2026
Commenting on the government statement on procurement yesterday by First Secretary of State Louise Haigh MP, Communication Workers Union (CWU) General Secretary Dave Ward said: “Public procurement is a significant economic policy lever in the government’s control, so I strongly welcome the First Secretary of State’s commitment to prioritise British jobs and support young workers in public contracts going forward.
“The plans are important step towards rebalancing the economy by compelling businesses to put more skin in the game within the local communities in which they operate.
“This new approach which holds companies to account can help workers develop new skills and create more apprenticeships and work placements alongside delivering wider community and local economic benefits.”
