Our postal service is in crisis
Royal Mail is a vital public service and key strategic national infrastructure. The company’s current performance is unacceptable and threatens the very future of postal services in Great Britain
The CWU is calling on the Government, Ofcom and Royal Mail to act now to save our postal service, restore public trust and build a network for the future.
The Government must act
- Prevent operators from undercutting standards through gig economy employment models.
- Develop a new ownership and governance model for Royal Mail with democratic public oversight.
- Reunite Royal Mail and the Post Office to create a stronger national network delivering postal, banking, government and community services.
End regulatory failure
Postal regulator Ofcom must prioritise quality of service, not price competition.
This means:
- Proper regulation of parcel delivery companies.
- Minimum service and labour standards across the sector.
- Giving Royal Mail greater freedom to grow and develop new services that generate revenue and support the network.
Royal Mail must play its part
- Fully implement the agreement between its new owners and the CWU, including the equalisation of terms and conditions for new entrants.
- Take responsibility for quality of service failures and deliver a clear plan for improvement.
