International Day For Elimination Of Racial Discrimination
March 21 2026Did you know that the 21st of March is the international day for the elimination of
racial discrimination?
This day is to commemorate the Sharpeville Massacre in 1960, when police in
Sharpeville opened fire on a peaceful protest against apartheid pass laws, killing 69
people during a peaceful protest against apartheid “pass laws”.
It is a day to raise awareness and encourage global action against racism, which in
turn has led to the end of the apartheid in South Africa and strengthened global
commitment to tackling racism.
The day is a reminder of the need to fight for equal rights and dignity for all
individuals, regardless of race, color, or origin, as reinforced by the International
Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination adopted by the
UN in 1965.
