Save our Post Office – all aboard the Battlebus!

Union members are preparing their Big Red Battlebus’ for next week’s nationwide tour of the UK’s major cities aimed at saving the UK’s Post Office network.

Visiting the major cities of England, Scotland and Wales, campaigners will be taking the CWU’s People’s Post Office message to the Great British public and asking them to join our struggle.

Day One, next Monday, sees the big launch in Edinburgh, where the bus will start on the outskirts at the mail centre in Cutlins Road and then head to the Frederick Street Crown Office in the city centre.

This is one of dozens of Crowns under threat from closure or franchising out to a private retailer, and people will be asked to climb aboard the battlebus to sign a giant post card, calling for the reunification of the Post Office with Royal Mail and back under public ownership.

Next stop will be Glasgow’s George Square for an afternoon session of leafletting, speeches and post card signing, and the first day will be rounded off by a campaign visit to nearby Paisley Crown Office.

Day Two is North West Day, with a morning event planned for Manchester – where the franchise/closure-threatened Mount Street Crown Office will be the first stop for the People’s Post Bus – and an afternoon stop at Liverpool Town Hall to meet local people and the city mayor.

The Midlands is the destination for Day Three, which will visit Birmingham city centre and Bromsgrove Crown Office and then on Day Four, the team heads to Wales for a morning in Cardiff, before crossing the River Severn to spend the afternoon campaigning in Bristol.

The tour ends back in London next Friday, when the giant post card will be handed into the headquarters of the Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) Department.
