LTB 614/16 – GEORGE MASSEY – BRISTOL AMAL BRANCH

No: 614/16

18th October 2016

TO: ALL POSTAL BRANCHES

Dear Colleague

GEORGE MASSEY – BRISTOL AMAL BRANCH

It is with great sadness that I must advise branches that on Monday 3rd October 2016 George Massey from the Bristol Amal Branch sadly passed away at the age of 100 years old. George was an honorary member of the Bristol Branch of the Union of Postal Workers (UPW) since 1959 and was the oldest surviving member of the UPW National Executive Council.

George joined the Post Office at the Small Street sorting office in 1930, as a messenger boy. Later he became a Sorting Clerk and Telegraphist/SC&T and following a grade re-organisation in the late 1940’s he became a Post and Telegraph Officer. He was at this time a UPW Section Secretary and delegate to Bristol Trades Union Council.

In 1959, with the approval of the CPGB, George became a supervisor and activist in their trade union which was the forerunner of the CMA. Until he retired in 1976 George was a member of the CMA Executive Council and full-time secretary of Bristol Council of Post Office Unions. Even after retirement George continued working as the secretary of the Post Office Pensioners Federation for over 10 years.

We can advise you that funeral arrangements for George are as follows:-

Date: Friday 21st October 2016

Time: 12.30pm

Place: Westerleigh Crematorium, Westerleigh Road, Bristol BS37 8QP

(There will be a reception at the Crematorium social centre)

George Massey made a huge contribution to the trade union and labour movement in Bristol and beyond. He showed great dedication to his members and comrades over many years and we know that he will be missed by friends and colleagues. At this sad time our thoughts are of course with George’s son David and daughter Margaret and the rest of his family. I will on behalf of the CWU convey our deepest sympathy and condolences to them.

Any further enquiries regarding this LTB should be addressed to the General Secretary’s Office at gsoffice@cwu.org quoting the reference GS1.1

Yours sincerely

Dave Ward
