LTB 530/17 – FRED SIMPSON – FORMER NATIONAL EXECUTIVE COUNCIL AND TELECOM AND FINANCIAL SERVICES EXECUTIVE MEMBER

No: 530/17

5th October 2017

TO:    ALL BRANCHES

 Dear Colleague

FRED SIMPSON – FORMER NATIONAL EXECUTIVE COUNCIL AND TELECOM AND FINANCIAL SERVICES EXECUTIVE MEMBER

It is with great sadness that I must advise branches that following a short illness with pancreatic cancer, Fred Simpson former NEC and T&FS Executive member passed away on the 2nd October 2017.

Fred joined the POEU in April 1977 and as a member of the Bristol External Branch became a Committee Representative in 1984 and during his lifetime held many positions within the union.   Fred was elected to the T&FS Executive and National Executive Committee in 2006 until 2012, he was a union member for 41 years and 3 months.  Fred’s dedicated service to the union was recognised when he was presented with the union’s highest award, National Honorary Membership in September 2017.

Fred made a huge contribution over many years to both the CWU and its predecessor unions – and to the wider trade union movement.  He was a well-respected trade unionist of conviction and I know that he will be greatly missed by his friends and colleagues in the union and wider labour movement.

At this sad time our thoughts are of course with Fred’s wife Penni and their family.  I will on behalf of the CWU convey our deepest sympathy and condolences to his wife and other family members.

Fred’s Funeral arrangements are as follows:-

Thursday 19th October at 2.45pm

at the Waterside Chapel, Westerleigh Crematorium
NB postcode for Satnav is BS37 8RF

Followed by a gathering at The Lawns, Church Road, Yate, BS37 5BG

Please note that the family have advised that the dress code is whatever you feel comfortable in.

The family have requested no flowers but would welcome donations to Cancer Research UK and RNLI.
