LTB 340/2017 BT Consumer: Bank Holiday Pay

No. 340/2017

20th June 2017

Dear Colleagues,

BT Consumer: Bank Holiday Pay

I am pleased to report that the National Team has now resolved the issue of the correct formula for Bank Holiday payments. This follows on from the escalation to Group Reward as explained in LTB 742/2016.

BT has now confirmed that when working a Bank Holiday in contractual hours the premium payment is in addition to the normal daily rate of pay. The BT view now lines up with the position of the CWU.

A copy of the BT communications that have been issued are attached which confirms that the payments apply as follows.

For each hour worked on a bank holiday an additional payment of 2 x base pay is paid, for Christmas day this is 3 x base pay.

If members believe that they have been underpaid for working Bank Holidays since 2016 then in the first instance this should be brought up with their Line Manger. BT does not believe that there will be many cases as payments have tended to be in line with the formula above.

This issue has been outstanding with BT for over 15 months and I would like to thank members and CWU reps for their patience.

Separately BT has indicated to the CWU that it wants to review Bank Holiday attendances/allowances in an effort to “simplify processes and align them to customer needs”. This review has not yet commenced and in the meantime current arrangements continue to apply.

If Branches experience any problems with implementation that cannot be resolved locally then please escalate the issue to CWU HQ.

Yours sincerely,

Nigel Cotgrove

Assistant Secretary
