LTB 060/17 – CWU Industrial Training Courses
No. 60/2017
31st January 2017
TO: ALL BRANCHES WITH POSTAL MEMBERS
Dear Colleague,
CWU Industrial Training Courses
Further to LTB 711/16 and in line with the Union’s Education and Training Strategy, I am writing to Branches to confirm the arrangements for running the CWU’s three, one-day industrial training courses covering Industrial Relations, Conduct and Attendance.
Through the Education and Training Working Group, our strategy has focused on a number of key areas:
Reviewing and developing our core industrial training courses. Last year, the CWU successfully launched our hard-hitting, one-day IR training to supplement the other current one-day courses on Conduct and Attendance. In addition, the Group is now close to finalising the content of a new, one-day course relating to Resourcing which will be rolled out in the coming months. Having established the four key one-day industrial courses, we are also reviewing the content and structure of the Postal Policies and Procedures course to ensure that it supports our core industrial training programme and is up to date and fit for purpose’.
Establishing a national network of CWU training facilities with a list of trainers in each locality qualified to undertake the relevant training. We are in the process of finalising the national list of CWU venues and locations equipped with the necessary facilities and allocating the respective tutors to each locality/division.
Standardising the way our courses are requested and administered with a central contact point for ordering materials and returning completed attendance and evaluation sheets. This is important as it allows us to effectively review the content and success of our industrial training courses and provide proper feedback to ensure that all our postal training is properly recorded, monitored and assessed. In future therefore, Branches who wish to run any of the CWU’s one-day industrial training courses should request all materials via Maxine Todd at Alvescott (mtodd@cwu.org) copying the DGS(P) Department into the request. Branches should then return completed attendance sheets and student/tutor evaluation forms to Maxine to ensure that all our records are kept fully up to date.
Branches will appreciate that how we educate and train our local Representatives is a critical issue for the Union as a whole. As members and Branches seek to tackle a number of workplace issues (such as ensuring the right levels/mix of resourcing and that management follow the terms of our agreements) we need to make certain that we are informing and equipping our Representatives with the right knowledge and skills that best support them in the workplace.
Against that backdrop we conclude that it is only by properly reviewing our courses will we improve and shape our training to best meet the latest requirements of Branches and members. I would therefore ask Branches to assist us in applying the new arrangements to ensure that we follow a consistent process for running all future industrial training courses.
With thanks in advance for your assistance and continued support.
Any enquiries relating to this LTB should be directed to the DGS(P) Department.
Yours sincerely
Terry Pullinger
Deputy General Secretary (Postal)
