Owner Drivers/Self-employed

We understand that being a self-employed “service partner” in Companies like DHL, Hermes, Yodel, Parcelforce and DPD isn’t always as straight forward as it first sounds! When most people think of being self-employed the first thing people often think is “you’re your own boss”, you can choose when to work and what work to take. However we know from speaking to our members that postal companies using the “self-employment” model of employment, that this is often not the case.  We understand that you are constantly under pressure to complete deliveries on time, to take on extra work or to find your own cover whether that’s because you have fallen ill, need time off to deal with family emergencies or need to take some holiday time. “The Company” benefits from the flexibility you bring to their business and we believe that you should benefit from the success of the company too!

The CWU is the trade union for the Postal Sector, we are completely independent from the Companies you work in, run by our members for our members. We have already negotiated some of the best contracts in the industry and we want you to help us make sure that every driver from across the sector, employed and self-employed, enjoys the best contract and the best terms and conditions.

We want to hear from you – What it’s like to work in this sector and the issues you face as an owner driver, what the company does well, and what improvements could be made to improve your working life.
