This evening, the CWU’s deputy general secretary postal and the chief executive officer of Royal Mail will be jointly hosting a nationwide broadcast to everyone in the company to launch the latest initiative aimed at improving workplace culture across Royal Mail.

“We are reaching out to everybody and every workplace via a number of initiatives to understand and improve trust and the culture in the workplace, with a degree of high-level joint commitment never shown before” says CWU deputy general secretary Terry Pullinger.

“And we genuinely want the true perspective from the people at the ‘coal face’ and if that exposes some uncomfortable truths then so be it. We are totally committed, and serious, about improving the culture in RMG but we need the truth to understand how we do it.

“So, we’re urging our members to take part, to express their truth, and to make their voices heard.”

Every individual among the company’s c140,000 employees is being invited to take the time to respond to a questionnaire asking a series of key questions about their daily experiences and for their opinions as to how this can improve.

Up until May 9th, postal workers will have the opportunity to access the survey via QR code, weblink or through the Royal Mail Group ‘People App’, he explains, adding that the CWU has been closely involved at senior level in setting up this project.

“The company held its own employee trust survey back in February in a different and more succinct format, and the results were far more authentic, honest and in some instances more damming than previously seen, however the overall response rate was relatively low,” Terry continues.

“As a consequence, we’ve been working with the business to jointly develop this more streamlined survey that can be promoted by the union as well and with the hope of reaching the widest possible audience and achieving the fullest possible engagement.”

Culture and trust have been fundamental issues in the industrial disputes that have occurred within Royal Mail over recent years and the union’s view is that they are crucial factors in deploying national agreements successfully and the future of this great public service – “culture is the one thing that changes everything” says our DGSP.

In order for the workplace culture and the workplace environment are to be improved, a start must be made by accurately identifying the specific issues, their causes and some potential solutions and the importance of the Big Trust Survey is that, in Terry’s words, it can “be an important catalyst for improving culture, trust and the working environment going forward.”

While individuals responding to the Big Trust Survey will not be identifiable, their workplaces will be and this will be important in order for issues to be successfully followed up, with survey data being jointly assessed in order to develop joint action plans at local level to address specific issues.

In a message direct to members, Terry urges: “This is your opportunity to individually influence the future, make sure you take it.

“The Four Pillars Agreement established a guiding principle in respect of culture, asking: ‘Would you be happy for a member of your family to work in your workplace’?

“If your workplace is great, then please tell us what makes it great, if it’s not then tell us why, this is about what it says on the tin, getting to the truth,” Terry says.

“This evening’s event is the first of its kind, the CEO and the DGSP unscripted and live to take your questions. I’m really looking forward to it and I hope as many of you as possible will be able to join us.”
