Respect & Tolerance
20th October 2009
The union's national equality officer Linda Roy, has taken the opportunity to remind everyone on the issue of promoting tolerance and respect towards your fellow work colleagues, irrespective of a person's lifestyle or issues pertaining to gender dysphoria.
Rule 2.4 of the CWU Rule Book makes it absolutely clear that no-one should have to tolerate any forms of discrimination on the stated strands. We condemn all who perpetrate discrimination and will not support any individual and organisation who does not support and share our equality policies and objectives.
Linda said "People do need to be made aware from time to time that whilst everyone is different, everyone is absolutely equal too. People must not, under any circumstances be labelled or targeted just because of a lifestyle issue pertaining to something such as their sexuality or [their perceived and legally recognised] gender identity. In relation to the latter the law makes it absolutely clear that any form of harassment or discrimination on the grounds of gender identity issues are illegal and possibly prosecutable using criminal law."
The CWU does have information relating to raising awareness on transgender issues and this has been circulated previously. Anyone wishing to receive this again should contact the Equal Opportunities Department.
