Reasonable adjustment trial for Royal Mail workers

27th October 2011

A new "reasonable adjustment" system to help workers with disabilities is being trialled at South Midlands Mail Centre, after union negotiators took the issue up with Royal Mail following a key resolution passed at this month's CWU Disability Conference.

Assistant secretary Ray Ellis explained that the new Reasonable Adjustments Made (RAM) card would "act as a quick and easy piece of literature that an employee who has restrictions can hand to any manager, should they be requested to perform work outside of their capabilities."

Once the trial run has been completed, the "RAM" system will be assessed and, if it has been successful, RAM is likely to be rolled out across the company's operations.

The union's national equality officer Linda Roy said that she was pleased to see "quick progress" on the issue.

"South Midlands Postal Branch brought this matter to conference, successfully moving a resolution that instructed the union to take this matter up with Royal Mail to put in place a card system along the lines of the BT Passport, which is successfully used for our telecoms colleagues," she added.

The RAM card (sample pictured) is intended to prevent any difficulties arising over a worker's capabilities and is expected to be beneficial to both the employee and the manager, as the RAM CARD will clarify what capabilities have been agreed for the individual to perform.
