Nominations open for Ken McKenzie Award for Lifelong Learning
7th August 2012
It's time to find the CWU's best union learning rep!
Entries are now open for the annual Ken McKenzie Award for Lifelong
Learning which recognises exceptional achievements and
contributions to lifelong learning by a CWU union learning rep
(ULR) or a group of CWU ULRs.
Nominations can be made by branches, regional learning
committees or regional committees by completing a nomination form
before the closing date of Friday 12 October.
Trish Lavelle, CWU Head of Education
and Training, said: "The Ken McKenzie award is a wonderful
celebration of lifelong learning and in particular the amazing reps
who bring training to our members. Union learning is special
because many people who access it have not had the confidence or
opportunity to get involved in education since leaving school.
"This award recognises a rep or groups of reps who have
made a significant contribution to lifelong learning within the
CWU. I strongly encourage branches and regional committees to put
forward ULRs in their areas to showcase the wealth of talent we
have within the union. The presentation of the award will be made
at our annual ULR event on 20 and 21 November 2012 in York."
CWU has run an annual awards scheme to recognise the effort and
achievement of learning reps, originally called the 'Annual CWU
Union Learning Awards for Innovation and Achievement'. Ken
McKenzie was an exceptional ULR from Scotland who sadly died from
cancer in 2009. Following Ken's untimely death, his branch -
the Edinburgh, Dundee and Borders branch - put a motion to CWU
Conference suggesting the award be named after Ken and this was
implemented in 2010.
Last year it was awarded jointly to Steve Hackford and Parminder
Kaur following a good number of nominations of a very high quality.
Completed nominations should be sent to:
Michelle Simpson, CWU Education and Training Department, 150 The
Broadway, Wimbledon, London, SW19 1RX or email learn@cwu.org.
- Closing date for nominations: Friday 12 October 2012.
- Winner(s) announced: 20 November 2012 at CWU's ULR National Networking Event, York
