Fightback continues at Virgin Media after derecognition blow
1st February 2013
A major fightback is underway at Virgin Media -
including special offers for new members - following the
company's shocking announcement to derecognise all trade unions
at the company - of which the largest is the CWU.
Since Virgin Media made the outrageous declaration before
Christmas, the union and its reps at the company have been out all
over the country, despite the snow and ice, distributing leaflets,
explaining the situation and encouraging staff to join the union.
CWU has also launched a special offer for new members at a
discounted rate of £4.99 a month for their first year.
This has resulted in a boost in membership as staff
at Virgin Media increasingly realise the benefit of an independent,
democratically accountable trade union over a staff forum set up by
CWU is now preparing to write to members to ask them whether they would like the matter to be taken to the Central Arbitration Committee (CAC), which has statutory powers to resolve disputes on derecognition.
CWU assistant secretary John East said:
"We will be sending letters out in the coming weeks, asking
members to come back to us with a simple yes or no. As soon as we
receive their answer we will prepare our next steps.
"CWU membership at Virgin Media is as relevant as ever. We encourage all members at the company to talk to non-members about the benefits of membership and recognition, and to support our move to do all we can to regain it."
