CWU star fights MND with Walk to D’feet
4th April 2012
Mike Findley MBE, a CWU Gold Badge Award holder and
major charity fundraiser for Motor Neurone Disease (MND), is now
organising the seventh Mike Findley MND Fund sponsored walk.
Mike was diagnosed with MND in 2005. In more than 40 years with
the union, he has held many senior elected and honorary positions.
He was made an MBE in the 2010 New Year Honours List.
The walk, which will take place on Sunday 24 June at 1pm, will
form part of the MND Association's National Walk to D'Feet
event, which raises money for much-needed research into this
terrible condition.
Mike, who has already raised more than £100,000 for MND and
recently received the 'Freedom of the Borough' from Redcar
& Cleveland Borough Council for his outstanding contribution,
said: "I would really love to beat our record so far (in 2010)
of 320 people taking part.
"Although we want to raise as much money as possible for
research into MND, it's also about raising awareness and making
people understand about one of the few conditions that has no
treatment and no cure.
"I honestly believe that one day, hopefully soon, a cure
will be found. Until then, we must continue to do all we can to
raise as much money and awareness as possible - to help research
nationally and to help local people as they battle daily against
having MND."
The walk will be preceded by the releasing of balloons in memory
of loved ones (from any illness). The route is less than four
miles, along the coast between Saltdean and Redcar in Cleveland.
People can enter as individuals or as a team and everyone will get a blue MND T-shirt. Free registration forms are available from Gary.biz (computer shop) in Marske Square, also from the Redcar Tourist Information Centre (24, High Street, Redcar), or you can send your name and contact details to Mike via e-mail mikefindley@ntlworld.com or by TEXT to (07805) 764212.
