CWU branch magazine competition winners
2nd December 2011
Tributes have been paid to the volunteer army of editors and contributors who collectively produce the union's thriving array of branch magazines.
Eight nominations were received for the CWU's 2011 Branch Magazine Competition - the annual contest rewarding the 'pick of the crop' of the membership publications put out by branches. Judging was conducted by Century One Publishing, the publishing house that designs the CWU Voice and number of the union's sector titles, including The Link, Women's Talk, Communiqué and the Youth magazine.
Commending the "very high magazine production standard" to which many of the entries to this year's Branch Magazine Competition were produced, Century One Publishing chief executive Nick Simpson singled out three titles for special praise.

Scooping top place for Essex Amalgamated branch was 'Exposure' - described as "a very confident magazine with all the hallmarks of having been produced to a high standard." |
|
|
Second place went to 'Crosstalk' from Greater London Combined - praised for its "pace and ease of navigation" and for demonstrating that "great publishing can be created with even the most modest budgets." |
|
|
Third place went to Central Counties and Thames Valley branch's 'Messenger' magazine, which was described as showing "all the signs of having an editorial team with a clear understanding as to their members'/readers' information needs." |
Thanks to sponsorship from Century One Publishing, the three
winning branches will be receiving prizes of £150, £100
and £50 respectively, allowing them to invest further in their
award-winning publications.
Congratulating not just the ultimate winners, but also the wider
army of dedicated volunteers on which branch magazines the length
and breadth
of the country rely, CWU general secretary
Billy Hayes said: "These awards are as much
about recognising the great publications produced by branches as
they are about celebrating the hard work, dedication and passion of
those working to keep members informed and represented at all
levels. Communication is a cornerstone of successful trade unionism
and it is important that we encourage branches to make the most of
their local communication network for the benefit of the
members."
