BT to take over Monteray

26th July 2012

BT is set to take over ownership of facilities company Monteray Ltd in a move announced earlier this week. CWU has welcomed the announcement and hopes it will lead to greater job security and a recruitment drive among staff in Monteray.

The new company will be called BT Facilities Services Ltd and will operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of BT. Whilst the new company will come under the umbrella of British Telecommunication Plc it will remain a company in its own right. CWU understands that the ownership will change no later than December 1 2012.

CWU assistant secretary Colin O'Callaghan welcomed the announcement, saying: "We hope that this will be good news for staff at Monteray. Being bought by a big group like BT should bring stability and more secure employment for staff, many of whom are already CWU members, although the exact picture in terms of impact on staff is not yet clear.

"It makes good sense for BT to take over Monteray - re-gaining control over the maintenance of the BT Estate. BT will in effect be bringing its facilities and buildings management contracts back in-house through this acquisition.

"We're seeking urgent meetings with the companies to establish what the short and longer-term effects will be on staff and how we can help to make this process as painless as possible for all who are affected. We're also encouraging any Monteray employees who are not already CWU members to join the union so that we can maximise the effectiveness of our representation of the full workforce through the transition of ownership and any changes which may be a part of that."

CWU is the recognised union for non-managerial staff within BT group and Openreach, CWU does not currently have recognition with Monteray but the union does have a significant density of membership. Efforts to boost recruitment and membership density will now be stepped up in light of the announcement, with the view of achieving recognition within Monteray and retaining that when it becomes BT Facilities Services.

Monteray has staff in locations across the UK carrying out facilities management roles including technical and operational maintenance, ground maintenance and cleaning.
