BT Estate to be Hit by new Facilities Management Deal
8th May 2009
Today, 8th May 2009, Monteray will place at least 1600 people, or 70% of their workforce, at risk of compulsory redundancy. This follows on from an agreement between BT and Monteray by which the revenue Monteray derives from the BT contract will be reduced by 22% in each year of the current contract (which runs until 2014, with a possible 4-year extension).
Although we estimate probably 400 jobs will actually go, of particular concern for Monteray members is that we are operating within the terms of a deal that has already been struck between their employer and BT. It is a source of great regret that neither BT nor Monteray thought to approach the union at an earlier stage - something that could conceivably be in breach of relevant legislation.
Assistant Secretary, Simon Sapper, said "We think BT has rushed this decision and not consulted properly over the contract re-negotiation. We appreciate that the company is operating in difficult times but we strongly believe these cuts are above and beyond what is realistic for maintaining service levels. We ask them to reconsider the level of cuts."
