Following an extensive and successful campaign by CWU members, local groups and the public, the Post Office has made the decision to keep Bridgend Post Office in its current location and to preserve its Crown status.

The CWU welcome the news that Sir Brendan Barber, former General Secretary of the TUC has been appointed as an independent director of a newly formed Openreach Board. The Board which has been set up by BT, following the Ofcom review of Digital Communications is designed to secure a more transparent and autonomous business for Openreach and therefore will oversee strategy, investment and service delivery.

BT Third Quarter Results

BT’s results for quarter three issued today, show BT are in line with market expectations. Although pre-tax profits are down to £526m for the quarter; for the year they are a healthy £1.9bn. Revenue has grown to £6.1bn and for the whole year is up 33%. And although cash flow has taken a dive this quarter, it remains strong at £369m. Consumer-facing businesses and acquisition of EE continue to profit and the business has achieved record fibre broadband connections.

CWU condemns further Post Office closures and 400 plus job losses

The Post Office has today announced that it is to close and franchise a further 37 of its flagship Crown office branches, with a loss of an estimated 300 staff, and cut 127 Financial Specialist roles across its network. On top of the sixty two branches announced for closure and franchise in 2016, the 400 plus job cuts brings more misery to Post Office workers and the customers they serve.

The Communication Workers Union has called on the government to intervene to reverse the Post Office’s proposals to close its healthy Defined Benefit (DB) pension scheme following the approval of the closure plans by the scheme Trustees – in a five to four vote – yesterday (Tuesday 11 October). The scheme, which is in surplus, is planned for closure from April 2017 affecting around 3,500 people.
