Joint Statement by BT, Connect & CWU on Harassment
Joint Statement from
CWU, Connect & BT
Finding the right words to come to terms with the tragic events of
the 11th September is far from easy. Our hearts go out to the
families of the dead & injured. This tension and concern
continues with the start of the action now being undertaken by the
US-led alliance.
Inevitably, the actions taken in the last month have led to increased racial and religious tensions across the world, and potentially within our communities and workplaces.
BT, the CWU and Connect have multi-cultural workforces and memberships, reflecting the rich diversity of the society in which we each operate. In such a period of heightened tension, we must all remember that our best response to this is to redouble our efforts to work together, to hold fast to BT's key value - to respect each other. We must also bear in mind that our personal performance is measured by competencies including Value differences.
It is vital that every one of us remains focused on working together as a team, showing respect for all our colleagues, customers and suppliers regardless of race or religion.
It is particularly important that we also make clear that harassment & bullying, no matter what form it takes, will not be tolerated and any incidents will be dealt with firmly. We should also be mindful of the fact that casual remarks or banter, particularly on issues of race and religion, can and do cause deep offence, especially in the current situation.
