John East - Organising
John became active in
the Union on commencing employment with BT in October 1983.
Following the 1987 dispute over BT pay, he became Branch Chairperson, going on to become Branch Secretary and London Regional's lead negotiator for BT's largest division in 1992. He was elected to the Executive in 2000, and subsequently elected as National Organising Secretary in 2008.
From his earliest involvement with the Union, he has always sought to spread its influence and to organise members. In the 1980's, John was involved in trying to unionise Cable TV workers in Croydon. This eventually lead to union recognition in Telewest and Virgin Media, the Union's first successful recognition campaign.
