The Northern Ireland Regional Secretary, Lawrence C.Huston has been elected to the ICTU National Executive. The elections took place at the recent Biennial Delegate Conference which was held in Killarney, Co Kerry. Lawrence said " For a small union like ours with only 6,000 members in the north to get a delegate elected to the ICTU Executive is no mean achievement and is testament to the close working relationship we enjoy with other affiliates. In thanking my own union and the General Secretary for his support it is important we fully recognise and appreciate the support of the affiliates of Congress, without which we would not have been successful"

Hundreds of ICTU Delegates Assemble for Biennial Delegates Conference 2011.

Up to 800 trade union delegates, guests and observers from Ireland and abroad gathered in Killarney for the 2011 Biennial Delegate Conference of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions. The Irish Congress represents some 800,000 people working in both the private and public sectors, north and south of the border and is the largest civil society body on the island.

The 2011 conference heard from a range of speakers, including Taoiseach Enda Kenny; Tanaiste, Eamon Gilmore; Sr Stanislaus Kennedy of the Immigrant Council of Ireland and Sharan Burrow the head of the global International Trade Union Confederation (ITCU) which represents over 175 million workers in 150 countries.

Congress General Secretary David Begg said the conference was taking place at a "unique juncture in the movement's history and finds it in robust good health, despite the very challenging conditions of the last two years."

The Conference debated over 40 motions across both jurisdictions, dealing with the economic crisis, the bank bailout, job creation, improved rights in the workplace, the future of the European Union and the Middle East.

Delegates also debated and adopted overwhelmingly, a new report on the structures of the Irish trade union movement with a view to ensuring it is best placed to meet the challenges of the future. The Report of the Commission on the Trade Unions was prepared by Philip Jennings and Phililp Bowyer of the Uni Global Union.

The Irish Congress of Trade Unions is affiliated to the ITUC.
