How do I become a Union Learning Representative?

The role of a Union Learning Rep is an official post within the CWU constitution and is embedded in law within the Employment Act 2002 and accredited by the ACAS Code of Practice 2009. To become a ULR you must be appointed or elected by your Branch (subject to the Branch rules).

The best way to find out more is to contact your local Branch. If you are unsure who to contact, follow the links on this site to your region. You should then be able to find your Branch, and get the details of your local Lead ULR.

Alternatively, you could contact one of the Regional Learning Committee Officers listed on the regional pages. They will be happy to talk to you about the role of a ULR and give the appropriate contact details within your branch.

Finally, you can email learn@cwu.org. Please include your contact details, workplace/employer or branch details, and we will ensure you are put in touch with your local ULR or branch.

In order to legally be a ULR and be able to access your legal rights as detailed in the ACAS Code of Practice, your Branch Secretary must complete the CWU ULR Appointment form and take 3 copies. The original should be provided to your manager, the second should be sent to the Education and Training Dept and CWU Head Office, the third should be kept on file in the Branch office along with other reps accreditation and the final copy should be held by yourself as a ULR. You can download a copy of the ULR Appointment Form here.
