Flexibility
Dear Colleagues,
This page is intended to help members understand what flexible
working options may be available to them, and how to go about
persuading management to provide the necessary flexibility.
Some of the options contained in this section are guaranteed by
law. These are:
- Time Off For Dependants
- Parental Leave
- Maternity Leave
- Flexibility Working Summary
These rights can, if necessary, be enforced through an
Employment Tribunal. Other options are negotiated agreements, which
are Royal Mail policy and should not be unreasonably withheld by
managers who are responsible for putting in place any flexible
arrangements. Although the right to paid special leave in certain
circumstances is at the discretion of management, you have a right
to be treated fairly and equally with other colleagues and if you
feel you are not being treated fairly, you should ask the Union to
help.
It is important when making any request to management to state what
you want clearly, preferably in writing and to understand the full
implications of your request. You may find it helpful to talk to
your local representative before making a request. If necessary,
the local Union will ring Headquarters for advice on your behalf.
We hope you find this publication useful and informative.
