Domestic Violence
Because domestic violence causes distress to members
and can affect their employment it is also a trade union issue.
The CWU is committed to oppose all forms of domestic and workplace
violence and to assist members who are affected by such
violence.
Facts and Figures
- Although not the only sex to be victims of Domestic Violence, 1 in 5 women suffer violence or abuse at home.
- Domestic Violence is the leading cause of injuries to women aged between 15 and 44 years old.
- 43% of crime against women is domestic.
- The number of domestic assaults reported rose by 79% between 1981 and 1991.
- It is estimated that only a quarter of Domestic Violence incidents are reported to the police.
- The estimated number of Domestic Violence incidents in 1995 was 6.6 million.
So why is domestic violence a trade union
issue?
A victim may suffer from the following:
- Bodily injuries - not always visible
- Mental injuries - hardly ever visible
- Loss of self esteem
- Loss of confidence
- Insomnia
- Depression
- Stress
- Agoraphobia
- Loss of trust in others
- Anxiety
Any of these will affect performance and/or attendance at work; therefore Domestic Violence is an issue for trade unions and employers.
What help can a victim get?
If you are suffering Domestic Violence or Abuse, you will need to
talk to someone about it.
Contact your branch who will be able to help with the immediate
effects for you at work.
