CWU wishes Brendan Barber well
Responding to the news today (Wednesday) that TUC general
secretary Brendan Barber intends to retire towards the end of the
year, the Communication Workers Union thanks him for his leadership
and support during his ten years in office.
Billy Hayes, CWU general secretary, said:
"Brendan Barber has given the UK trade union movement
excellent and unwavering leadership whilst at the helm of the TUC.
He is a respected leader, negotiator and trade unionist.
"Brendan made himself available to the CWU on many
occasions. He assisted us during difficult disputes and has helped
CWU represent our members across all our sectors of telecoms,
financial services and post.
"I have had the pleasure of sitting on the TUC General
Council and Executive Committee with Brendan for many years. His
calm insight and good humour never fails to impress. Under
Brendan's watch many initiatives have blossomed, notably the
successful UnionLearn project which has brought education to
thousands of working people.
"We wish Brendan well with whatever he chooses to embark on
next and feel confident that he leaves the TUC in good shape to
represent the UK's working people."
