CWU welcomes strong BT results and congratulates staff
The Communication Workers Union today (Friday) welcomes BT's
strong third quarter results and congratulates staff, whose hard
work has contributed to the boost in profits.
The union's Deputy General Secretary Andy Kerr
said: "BT has delivered another strong set of results with
profits and cash flow up significantly in the quarter. This is
welcome news, reflecting the dedication and hard work of BT's
staff, and demonstrates the company's resilience in difficult
economic times.
"Take up of BT's superfast broadband product BT Infinity
is growing strongly with 95,000 customers added in the quarter, and
it is also encouraging to see BT is still investing heavily in
fibre broadband. We welcome the news today that BT is set to double
the speeds it can offer in Fibre to the Cabinet-enabled areas, from
40Mbps to 80Mpbs with a new product being introduced this spring.
"BT expects to see around two thirds of the UK with access to
fibre broadband over its network by 2014, and believes it has the
potential to take fibre to 90% of homes and businesses by working
with local councils. This is great news for UK plc and the nation
as a whole, with improvements to our digital infrastructure
offering the potential to underpin economic recovery and create
thousands of jobs."
BT financial results for the third quarter to 31 December 2011
showed reported profit before tax was up 48% to £652m and
reported earnings per share was up 40% at 6.3p.
CWU represents non-managerial grade staff at BT, including
engineers, call centre and support staff.
