Criminal Defence Scheme
J.) Criminal Defence Scheme (on duty only)
This scheme
is available for members who face a prosecution for a criminal act
allegedly committed on duty. Solicitors specialising in criminal
matters are engaged by headquarters and representation will be
provided under certain circumstances. Members should contact the
legal services department once they have been charged. They should
contact the duty solicitor at the police station prior to
interview. They will not be charged for the use of the duty
solicitor at the police station.
CRIMINAL HELPLINE (ENGLAND AND WALES)
Members can now access dedicated Criminal Helplines which are provided by two firms on the CWU Solicitors Panel.
These 24 hour Helplines will provide advice and assistance, where appropriate, where members find themselves charged with a criminal offence either on duty or away from work.
In the event legal representation is required this may involve legal costs. However, in certain circumstances this may be covered by legal aid. These issues will be explained by the Solicitor. If in the event legal costs are applicable they will be the sole responsibility of the individual member and not the CWU Legal Services Department.
Members can access one of the two following Helplines:

Walker Smith Way 24 hr Crime and Defence Representation:
