Women’s Talk column: Losers in the cuts agenda

Countess Markievicz was the first women elected to Parliament, not the Tory Lady Astor as sometimes supposed. Despite the gloss, the Tories are attacking women. The current coalition is cutting housing benefits, child benefits, maternity benefits, and dismantling the equality duty – all of which disproportionately affect women. The only thing which is up for women is unemployment, currently at a 25 year high. Cuts to the public sector are affecting women worse than men with more women’s jobs being lost and access to services slashed. Charities are having their funding slashed and women’s refuges are turning vulnerable women away.

We have to challenge this and we have to vote this nasty party out of government before they cause any more damage. CWU will help you make your voice heard.
