Fire has always been an essential help to mankind, but also a constant source of danger. Without it there would be no society or civilisation, as it is our primary source of warmth and energy, and one of the first things to distinguish man from other species has been his ability to harness fire and use it for his own purposes. But fire is not always so easily contained as we would like to think, and it is when it gets out of control, that is when the trouble starts, destroying property and threatening life.
